Amazon Summary: A romantic, mind-bending novel about parallel worlds, soul mates, destiny, and the big-time consequences of even our smallest choices, perfect for fans of The Future of Us and Before I Fall.
Abby Barnes had it all planned out—high school, college, career—but one decision made in her senior year of high school changed her carefully mapped-out future.
When Abby wakes up the morning of her eighteenth birthday, it's as though her past has been rewritten. Abby discovers that a cosmic collision of parallel universes has erased her old reality. Now Abby is falling in love with a boy from her Parallel's memories—a boy she's never even met. She's living the life she always wanted, but what if living her Parallel's life means she loses her soul mate?
Review: This eBook was on my list of books that I still needed to read. I randomly chose this title, not remembering what the book was about.
I figured it might be about parallel universes and it turns out I was right.
This is a medium read. People may or may not have trouble reading along to it since it goes back and forth between years. Give this book a try as it should get easier to follow once you know the format of the story.
The story is told from 2008 and 2009. In chapter one, Aby is living her life and tells you how she got to this point in time, showing you what happened a year before that lead to her living in California. The chapter ends, when the day is over and she goes to sleep. We then go back into the past in Chapter 2 where she redoes a very important day in her life (which may not seem important at first glance) that has been altered by the fact that there was an earthquake causing her alarm not to go off and unraveling a chain of events that leads into the next chapter. In chapter 3, Abby is back in 2009 as the next day to Chapter 1, only there is major difference. She now has a new life as a student at Yale and is unsure how she got there. She then slowly starts to piece together that the parallel universes have collided and that her life is being controlled by the choices of the Parallel Abby (choices being one of the major themes). The story is divided into Here and There. Here is Abby in 2009 and There is Parallel Abby in 2008.
I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about parallel universes along the way. I felt like the descriptions of what parallel universes were, was easy to follow and the author made it simpler by having Abby reiterate the subject. I also enjoyed learning a little bit about the stars when Abby and another character where interacting.
I did enjoy the characters and how they each affected the outcome of the story, not only that of Parallel Abby. Ultimately, each decision Parallel Abby made, made me look forward to what would be different in the life of the real Abby. Abby becomes accustomed to her new life, so when issues start to arise she has to use her logic to move forward.
There is some humor in this book. It's more of the sarcastic kind as opposed to the lighthearted kind. There is also romance which becomes a big part of the story. The romance is complicated, but I do not want to spoil any of it for you.
Lastly, I was pleased with the ending. I like how it all came together in the end. Some may like the result while others may not, depending on what outcome you liked the best (will make sense when you read this I promise).
This book did make me reflect on how my life could have turned out had I made different choices in life and what my potential parallel universes would look like.
I really enjoyed this book, so I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a romance and a little bit of science fiction. This book will be one I eventually purchase as a hard copy and put on my bookshelf.
