*This is Book 1 of the Rebel Belle Trilogy

Summary From Amazon: Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him--and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more.

Review: When I decided to read this book, I did not have much to go
by. I did not read the summary for it and I did not look too much at the cover either. I failed to notice the sword above the necklace! I just assumed this was going to be about a southern belle. Most likely to be about a girl who was a part of some type of debutante society along with any school issues she may have. I will say I was soft of right.

This was a very easy read. I did enjoy the banter Harper had with her herself which did make me laugh at times. I very much enjoyed her thoughts about Superheroes! I recommend getting past the beginning as Harper can be a little off-putting at first (I explain this in the spoiler section, but only read once you are done with the book). You get to see the transition from finding out that she is no longer a "normal" girl to owning what she has become. She has to protect her arch-nemesis and has some very funny scenes with him including a nice car chase scene. She does end up liking David which is pretty noticeable from the start and apparently disclosed in the book summary. This of course complicates the purpose of her newly found Paladin duties. You get to see how she handles it all.

The book does have additional characters such as Harper's parents, her friends, her boyfriend, her aunts, classmates, and David's aunt. We get to meet an additional character further into the story.

This is overall a light, fun read. I definitely recommend this book. I will be picking up the next book in this trilogy.

Spoilers Below

I will say that the whole lip gloss issue drove me crazy! I was like we get it, you apparently look awful without lip gloss, especially with a "hideous" salmon color. I know that it lead to a major part of the story line, but I felt there could have been a better way to do it. I was slightly put off by it along with acknowledging how costly her dress was, but I am glad I continued to read the story.

The relationship with Ryan I was glad came to an end, especially after the way he acted  when he found David and Harper talking. I was also not a big fan of him when he was clearly showing signs of being into Harper's friend Mary Beth. He even had a nickname for her, "MB." Mary Beth herself was not much of a friend to Harper. She definitely knew she was flirting with Ryan even with Harper knowing about it. I will say Harper was mature about it towards the end, mentioning how she just wanted Ryan to be happy even if it was with Mary Beth.

I liked the addition of the "wild card" Blythe. I think it was rather naive to for Harper and David to go on the quest of finding out if the scholarship was real. This is where we are first introduced to her. She succeeded in her mission of putting the spell on David and in a turn of events, kidnapping Bee.

I did not see the part of Ryan becoming a Mage coming or Bee being turned into a Paladin. The second book of the trilogy will be unfolding these issues.
