by Simone Elkeles Summary from Amazon: When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart. Review: At first glance, I was not sure if I wanted to really read this book, but then when I started reading, I was glad that I did. I loved it! It was way more than what I was expecting. I was expecting the same type of story that is often told about two people who come from different backgrounds and end up falling in love. In a way I was right, but in a way I was also wrong. The story goes beyond the whole forbidden love concept. It deals with race, independence, acceptance, and of course, love. When reading a love story I often wish I could know what both main characters are thinking. I finally got that wish! In this story you get to know what both Britanny and Alex are thinking, which is great because there are always two sides to a story. You get to see why both characters are the way they are and why they do certain things. The book was funny, cute, emotional, and a bit predictable. Overall, it was well-written and I highly recommend it.
